Tetrahydrocannabivarin, or THCV, is a naturally occurring cannabinoid produced by the cannabis plant along with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD), and terpenes. While THCV is still new to the scene, it has impressed many with its energizing, focusing, and euphoric high–while still creating a lucid, uplifting, experience.
Think of THCV as a partner cannabinoid to THC, often inducing different and sometimes complementary effects. Natural Natural plants stay true to their source in nature and produce a naturally-occurring THCV.
Joyride and GSD both originated from a plant high in CBD and low in CBDV and THCV (varins). The plant had landrace characteristics such as a large plant stature and loose, airy, late-maturing flowers with low overall cannabinoid levels.
Through modern plant breeding techniques our varin plant was crossed with plants showing more desirable characteristics–early maturing and robust stature–resulting in the first cannabis varieties with naturally-occurring high-THCV, Joyride and GSD.
The science behind THCV.
THCV starts with butanoic acid (remember, it only has three side-chain carbon atoms); while THC begins with hexanoic acid (five side-chain carbon atoms). Both acids are then activated by the same acyl-activating enzyme (AAE) to produce butanoyl CoA (for cannabivarins) and hexanoyl CoA (for cannabinols).
For cannabivarins, butanoyl CoA eventually joins with divarinolic acid, which has two fewer carbon atoms than olivetolic acid which joins with the cannabinol hexanoyl CoA.
From here, the process continues in parallel, converting CBGVA (cannabivarins) or CBGA (cannabinols) by THCA synthase. Resulting in THCV once decarboxylated with heat.
